Overall Description
This two-story Craftsman-style bungalow in Kalispell’s northwest neighborhood is on the National Historic Register and has 3 bedrooms, 1-1/2 bathrooms, and a large, fenced yard on all sides. Built in 1913, the single-family home spans 2,000 square feet with a 1,200-square-foot, partially finished basement. The layout on the first floor includes an open floorplan living room, dining room and kitchen, and there’s a main bedroom and en suite bathroom adjacent. The second story, accessed via the old-growth stairway banister that greets you in the home’s front entry, includes two smaller bedrooms, a half-bath, and a smaller, gabled living room. Other features include an inviting, full-width, open front porch, and enclosed back porch/mudroom. Five south-facing windows on an oversized corner lot offer unobstructed views of the nearby Rocky Mountain foothills. There are several trail systems within biking distance of the property, and Kalispell’s quaint downtown is just four blocks away.
Living Room
The living room, accessed to the right of the front entryway, features box beam ceilings with picture and plate railing (also present throughout the open floor plan). Situated in the house’s southwest corner, the room’s large windows on both walls provide sunlight all day long. A brick hearth and wood stove warm the living room (as well as the adjacent dining room and kitchen) with crackle and glow. Heavily textured, taupe walls and white trim plus lightly stained original pine floors also keep things bright during the foggy months.
Primary Bedroom
The primary bedroom is accessible through a paneled, vintage door off the dining room. The room is carpeted, and the ceiling features a glossy, fine texture and 8-inch crown molding with picture-frame notching. A handsome, stainless fan/light fixture dresses up the ceiling, with additional light shining through a window overlooking a courtyard with flowering trees and privacy fence. The small closet offers under-stair storage and just enough hanging space, and a second door opposite accesses the en suite bathroom.
Primary Bathroom
The primary, en suite, bathroom is also accessible through the kitchen. Floors are laminate with a faux tile pattern. The original clawfoot tub with shower fixtures sits under a vintage, obscured-glass window and the bathroom’s original light fixture adorns the ceiling. The single vanity features a tall backsplash, a dark wood-stained cabinet, and brushed-steel fixtures and handles.
Outdoor Space
A Craftsman isn’t a Craftsman without “singing into the landscape,” as they say of this natural, rustic architectural style, and not enough can be said of the home’s oversized, corner lot. The property is raised above street level for added privacy and surrounded by a cedar fence on all sides. Exit the kitchen through an enclosed back porch/mudroom to access the backyard where there’s plenty of lawn for frisbee catch. And, wedding this property with a Flathead Valley staple, the big backyard is home to a productive cherry tree that’s great for fall pies. Exit the side-door to lounge in the courtyard and catch some early-morning sun or extend the evening by the firepit. Don’t forget that full-width front porch. Step out the century-old, historic front door with original wavy glass, and enjoy a rocking chair on the elevated stoop, designed with four columns on clapboard wooden piers, and watch the sun go down as deer congregate under the massive chestnut tree in the front yard.
